| I hate the idea of being on yet another medication, but my doctor has reminded me on a yearly basis that my numbers are not looking so great. So the question is what options do I have besides medications? Here are a list of foods you can eat to help lower your cholesterol and help you to be healthier.
Fiber is always an easy answer – Foods like whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables. My favorite fiber snack is the Fiber One Bars and Cereal. Tastes like a treat, but has 35% of your daily fiber. Cheerios really can help to lower your cholesterol!
Fish Oil is a wonderful source of good cholesterol and helps lower your ‘bad’ cholesterol. Eating salmon or another white fish twice a week will help you have a healthier heart and a lower cholesterol level.
Oatmeal or oat bran is also a great meal idea that lowers your cholesterol and if you doctor it up just right it can also add to the healthiness. I recommend you have a hot bowl of oatmeal with crushed walnuts or almonds, cinnamon and small chunks of apples on top. All these ingredients alone are heart healthy, mix them together and it’s a great tasting breakfast.
Do you sauté foods regularly? When I cook at home I use Grape seed oil or Extra Virgin Olive Oil. They are both a great source of good cholesterol and they improve the taste of your food. Next time you need a healthy meal why not sauté up some green beans, asparagus, onions, bell peppers and shrimp or chicken. Wonderful meal with healthy benefits.
Need a snack idea that your kids will love? What about homemade trail mix? I put Cheerios, Chex cereal, raisins, yogurt bites, Craisins and maybe some walnuts or peanuts to round out the snack. Bran muffins? I know, but if you use oat bran and mix in cinnamon chips and chocolate chips and perhaps some chopped walnuts what a great breakfast treat that your kids will even eat!
Next time you need a snack, find one that is not only tasty, but heart healthy too!!
