When looking for a special item to help celebrate a feat achieved by a friend, colleague, students, a wedded couple, parents, and so forth, you can always depend on crystal awards. Such an award is a thoughtful way of permanently recognizing a significant achievement because crystal will not fade or wear out, at least not before several lifetimes have come to pass. Crystal is also a beautiful material especially when you consider how well light sparkles when it passes through or is reflected from its surface; a deserving achievement will forever shine just like the crystal. Crystal for creating awards comes in different materials, with the most significant varieties being the optical and lead glass. Optical crystal is the finest form of crystal thanks to its very desirable properties - those of absolute clarity, hardness and flawlessness. This is the type of crystal that is used for high-end visual equipment, camera lenses, and even NASA telescopes. Optical crystal is manufactured by subjecting crystal to massive pressure with an aim to eliminate any bubbles and distortions, and thus making it applicable in such hi-tech environments. The downside to optical crystal is that it is only available as sheets, and as such only plaques and obelisks can be formed from it but not other forms of glassware. Optical crystal can however be subjected to further treatments so as to achieve accents such as blue, green, pink, amber, and even black. To create crystal awards in glassware shapes we can depend on lead crystal. Lead in its oxide form has been used since time immemorial to rid crystal of bubbles and other imperfections. Lead also gives crystal some flexibility and as such we can easily achieve crystal awards in the form of bowls, figurines and vases among others. Crystal can only be referred to as lead crystal if it has at least 24% lead content. However, since lead has been associated with causing birth defects, only the least amount of lead possible is used to create crystal articles. We can also have clear glass which is lead-free and also contains low iron levels. This is a more affordable option and has a fiery sparkle. Jade glass is another option which is unique because of its light green tint. Both types of glass can be polished and beveled/chamfered to achieve sparkling edges and pronounced facets. Molten glass is yet another crystal award option which is made from sand and recycled glass among other materials. It is cheap but carries bubbles and flow lines. To personalize crystal awards you have to engrave them and the best way to achieve this is through sandblasting. This technique lets you obtain deep-set designs for the awards. Laser etching is discouraged because more often than not it facilitates the easy chipping of texts and designs.
