� Before World War I, most of the current Ternopil oblast was part of Austro-Hungarian province Galicia. Only the northern-most section was within the borders of the Russia. From 1918 until World War II, the area formed the Tarnopol Voivodeship in the newly independent country of Poland. As was common throughout the western Ukraine, the non-Ukrainian population was concentrated in the cities. Before World War II, the population of Ternopil was 40% Polish, 20% Ukrainian, and 40% Jewish. The oblast is sometimes associated with the Ukrainian nationalist movement, as during the Polish-Ukrainian War, Ukrainian nationalist forces launched the Chortkiv offensive to stop Polish attempts to topple the newly established West Ukrainian People's Republic. Later the local ethnically Ukrainian population was loyal to the revolutionary UPA. Although Ternopil date of foundation is unknown, the first known reference to Ternopil occurs in 1524, when as a Polish town it was sacked by Tatars. Ternopil was known as a fortress. At the end of the 16th century the fraternity was organized which played an important part in the struggle against Catholicism. In 1548 Magdeburg Law was adopted in Ternopil. In 1655 Cossack troops headed by B.Khmelnitsky captured the town. But Ternopil remained under Poland’s control. On first partition of Poland in 1772 Ternopol was captured by Austria. In 1809-1815 it was ruled by Russia. After the fall of Austro-Hungary Ternopol the town was passed to Poland in 1920 and was annexed by the USSR in 1939. World War II inflicted exceptionally heavy damage on Ternopil. Present day Ternopil is an important railway junction and has light engineering, food-processing, and consumer-goods industries. Ternopil features A medical, teacher-training and financial institutes are also located in Ternopil. The climate in Ternopil is of moderate continental type, with warm humid summers and mild winters. Average temperature varies from 5 degs C below zero in January to 19 degs C above zero in July. For a long time it was called Tarnopol. The current variant of the city name was introduced in 1944. There are various versions of the city name origin. It is very likely that the city was called after the founder Yan Amor Tarnovsky. Ternopil attractions Although most of Ternopil is new, the 16th century Nativity and 18th century Dominican churches survived. The city is known for its architectural and cultural monuments. Ternopil is very comfortable for foreign travelers. There are a lot of exchange points and modern hotels. Ternopil is the center of a region famous through its castles, waterfalls, caverns and rivers. It is the start of picturesque rafting routes along the Dniester canyon, tours to Ternopol caverns, to the highest lowland Dzhurinsky waterfall and an ancient church in the rock in Monastirka on the river Strypa. Traces of ancient people sites are found in the nearest settlements Veliky Glybochok, Petrikiv and Stupky. In spite of destroying wars which the town faced several times, some house - monuments of architecture, history and culture are still preserved in the town. They are marked by features of eclecticism and modern styles - fashionable at that time. Architectural ensembles in the central part of the city give an idea of old Ternopil architecture.
